Personal Skills Development Plan

 What Skills Need Developing?

  • Writing in new genres
    • The majority of my writing has been done in the fantasy genre, which has limited me somewhat. I need to experiment more writing in different genres, as my customers won't just be requesting fantasy stories.
  • Screenwriting
    • I haven't done much screenwriting, and need to practice more to get more experienced with the formatting and rules/regulations associated with screenwriting. This is primarily for my TV & Film course next year in Uni, although I could potentially imagine someone requesting a screenplay version of their story if that interests them.
  • Camera Operation
    • I'm planning to do TV & Film next year in Uni, and need to get more practice behind the camera as that is something I'm expecting to be doing during the course.
  • Writing to a Brief
    • While I have done quite a bit of writing, I haven't done writing with a brief in a while, probably since my GCSEs. It'd be good to get some more practice writing something with specific guidelines that would be given by a customer.

Ways to Develop These Skills

  • Creative Writing
    • I could work on writing for different genres by just doing some creative writing in a genre that I'm less comfortable with, such as Sci-Fi or Horror. This would be an easy and engaging way to get some more practice with the genres whilst honing my writing ability.
  • Writing Via Prompts
    • There are a multitude of writing prompts available online that I could potentially use to give me guidelines to follow for a short story, allowing me to get some more practice writing to someone's brief and specifications.
  • Story to Screenplay Conversion
    • Once I've written some stories in different genres, I could kill two birds with one stone and convert one of the stories into a screenplay format, so that I can practice writing with the rules that a screenplay requires in its formatting.
  • Filming
    • I could also do some filming in order to practice operating behind the camera. Without other people to work with, this could be difficult as I wouldn't have much to film. I could potentially film a montage of interesting shots of a local area, but I'll have to see what is available when we begin developing said skills.
